Tips for a Great Fundraiser

Focus. Commit. Organize. Delegate. Promote.

FOCUS your fundraiser. $5,000 for repairs to the roof, $3,000 for two new computers, $2,000 for a new scholarship...set a reasonable goal for your fundraiser and stick to it! People are more likely to participate in a fundraiser if they know where their contribution is going and can verify that it got there.

COMMIT to your fundraiser. Don't feel awkward about asking for money. Your organization does important work in the community. A great number of people rely on you. (Its not as if your organization is raising money for frivolous purposes.) Remember, the more confident you are when asking for contributions, the more confident others are in making them!

ORGANIZE your fundraiser. Though the Fundraiser Portraits program follows a general format, the most successful fundraisers are those in which members of the participating organization become actively involved in deciding date(s), time(s), location(s), use of volunteers, breadth of promotion, etc...Tailoring the program to your organization's specific needs requires your input and maximizes success.

DELEGATE fundraising tasks. A small group of committed volunteers from your organization can make the difference between a great fundraiser and a mediocre one. The Fundraiser Portraits program often relies on volunteers from your organization to promote the fundraiser, as well as schedule sitting-times for fundraiser participants. The number of volunteers required will depend on the goals of your event and the number of people expected to participate. We suggest that organizations offer volunteers incentives (e.g., free portraits) for helping out.

PROMOTE your fundraiser. The Fundraiser Portraits program provides promotional display materials to your organization. We also encourage organizations to promote the event through any available newsletters, flyers, bulletin boards, etc...Members of your organization can also spread the word to extended family, friends, and neighbors. Remember, the more ambitious your goal, the greater the need for widespread promotion.
